▪️Does dry nursing prohibit marriage / establish suckling relationships▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:
The questioner says: An elderly woman used to suckle her grandson (her son’s son), but her breast did no contain any milk (i.e. dry nursing). The infant continued suckling to an extent where her nipple began producing a watery discharge. Now they want to marry him off to her granddaughter (her daughter’s son). Does this type of breastfeeding have an affect in prohibiting (marriage)?
The element which prohibits (marriage / establishes suckling relationships) results only from milk. This watery discharge emanating from the nipple -known as Masal (serum)- is not something which prohibits (marriage / establishes suckling relationships). It is only milk which makes marriage impermissible according to all the scholars, (due to the hadeeth):
((إنما الرضاعة من المجاعة))
“Breast-feeding (which makes marriage impermissible /establishes suckling relationships) is that which satisfies hunger.”
And this water discharge is not something which satisfies hunger.
Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ba-‘Alawi
