▪️Who do you hand your Zakaah to?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The questioner says: In our times, where does one hand in their Zakaah?

📝 Answer:

Zakaah is handed out to the eight categories mentioned in the saying of Allaah:

{إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ عَلَیۡهَا وَٱلۡمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَفِی ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلۡغَـٰرِمِینَ وَفِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِۖ فَرِیضَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ}

“Zakaah is only for (1) the poor, (2) for the needy, (3) for those employed to administer it, (4) for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺, (5) for ˹freeing˺ slaves, (6) for those in debt, (7) for Allaah’s cause, (8) and for ˹needy˺ travellers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allaah. And Allaah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. [Surat At-Tawbah 60]

If you are able, you should hand your Zakaah directly to (any of) these eight categories yourself, but if you are obliged and forced by those in authority to hand it over to them, then it’s they who will be held accountable for this on your behalf. Nonetheless, if you are able to give it to those who deserve it yourself, this is safer and better in terms of freeing yourself from any blame.
