▪️Referring to pilgrims as Haajj/Haaji▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:
The questioner says: Is it permissible to refer to someone whose performed Hajj as Haajj?
He is indeed a Haajj (a pilgrim), but there’s no evidence for allocating this title in this manner, whereby whoever performs Hajj it is said to them ‘O Haaji’. This should be left off because nothing has come from the Salaf -may Allaah be pleased with them- in this regard, so it’s better to refrain from using this title. However, it’s become somewhat of a habit/custom amongst the people here (in Yemen) to refer to the elderly as Haajj, even though some of them may not have even performed Hajj; they use this title (in respect) for the elderly.
And Allaah’s is sought.
Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ba-‘Alawi
