▪️Rows in prayer must be straight, but is it necessary to stand feet to feet or even ankle to ankle?▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam – may Allaah preserve him – was asked the following question:
The questioner says: During Rukoo’ (bowing) some people stand ankle to ankle with those praying adjacent to them, then as soon as they rise from Rukoo’ their feet return back to their previous position?
One must not overburden themself in this regard. If standing ankle to ankle is difficult, one should suffice with standing feet to feet (with the heels lined up).
It comes in some of the reports that some of the companions said:
“كان أحدنا يلزق قدمه بقدم صاحبه”
“We used to stand feet to feet”
If a person is able to stand feet to feet with their ankles touching then this is better, whether that occurs in Rukoo’ or while standing, but standing feet to feet is sufficient.
So this shouldn’t be something burdensome, as we find some people go overboard, crossing their feet over like the number eight (/\), diverging from the Qiblah.
Therefore one should stand feet to feet. As for leaving a gap between the feet, then this is not allowed because the prophet ﷺ said:
((لا تذروا فرجات للشيطان))
“Don’t leave any gaps for the Shaytaan”
Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ba ‘Alawi
