■ Teaching The Qur’an In Other Than The Arabic Language ■
The Questioner says: What is the ruling on the one who teaches the Qur’an in languages other than the Arabic language, such as English?
He is allowed to explain the Qur’an in any language he wishes. This is permissible and he is rewarded for connecting the people to beneficial knowledge and teaching them their religion.
As for recitation of the Qur’an, this cannot be done except in the Arabic language because this is how it was revealed by Allah ﷻ.
He ﷻ says :
“Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.”
And He also said:
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
“And indeed, the Qur’an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.”
“The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down.’
” Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] – that you may be of the warners -”
“In a clear Arabic language.”
It is therefore not permissible to recite the Qur’ān in other than the Arabic language. Meanwhile, its meanings may be explained in other languages.
It is appropriate for Non-Arabs to take an interest in learning the Arabic language, because doing so makes it easier for them to learn their religion.
Thus, this (teaching the Arabic language and encouraging others to learn it) should be among the top priorities of the teachers and callers who call to Allah ﷻ in non-Muslim countries. They will be rewarded greatly (by Allah ﷻ) for doing so (in sha Allah) because it is an important stepping stone in helping people understand their religion.
But if he simply continues translating for them, they will not understand a great deal, they will become dependent on translations and only understand what has been translated for them.
Therefore; encourage the people to learn the Arabic language, the language of the Qur’an and the language of their Prophet ﷺ.
