What is the ruling of Blasphemy?

Answered by our Shaykh, the ‘Allaamah, the Sincere Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahman Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajoori – may Allaah preserve him –

Question:

What’s the ruling concerning a man who has disputed with his wife, whereby she reminded him with Allaah, the Most High, and then he replied: be quiet before I cuss at you and cuss at your lord.

Does he disbelieve due to this?

Answer:

If he mentioned he will cuss at you and cuss at Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic; then this is disbelief, even if he didn’t actualise those words (curses). Because these words he uttered he didn’t venerate Allaah, the Lofty and Majestic.

His statement: I will cuss at your lord… even if he didn’t actualise it, this statement is disbelief because he mocked, the Mawlā, the Magnificent and Lofty, and it was lack of veneration. Exalted is He, the Most High, greatly above all that which the oppressors say.

If he intended those that raised her, like her father or mother when saying the word ˹ربك˺, then this isn’t disbelief, instead it’s wrong, due to the statement of the prophet ﷺ :

سباب المسلم فسوق وقتاله كفر”
“Cursing at a Muslim is fusūq (disobedience) and fighting him is disbelief”
[Bukhāri – Muslim]

And due to the statement of Allaah, the Most High:

“وَقُل لِّعِبَادِى يَقُولُوا۟ ٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ”
“And say to My slaves (i.e. the true believers of Islamic Monotheism) that they should (only) say those words that are the best.” [Al-Isrā:53]

And:

“وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا”
“and speak good to people” [Al-Baqara:83]

But the words in the question mention that he said this after she reminded him with Allaah, he intended Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic…

There is no power nor any might except to Allaah!
The severity of some people’s boldness!

Oh brother: the earth swallowing you and you sinking into its depths until the day of judgement is better for you than to mention the likes of these words, for you to commit yourself to blaspheme Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic.
