▪️The Qur’an was revealed in Seven ‘Ahruf’▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:
He Says: What does, ‘the Qur’an was revealed in seven Ahruf’, mean?
It is said that these seven ‘Ahruf’ refer to seven different dialects from the Arabic dialects. This is the most common explanation given.
There is another explanation which is very similar, but better than the first; that is these seven ‘Ahruf’ refer to the seven modes of recitation.
It may also be referring to variations in the (Arabic) language, i.e. The different dialects; because the Arabs had different dialects; there was the Quraysh dialect, the dialect of Thaqeef, and so on. They all spoke the same language, but were different to one another in their dialects. So (in order to accommodate this) the Qur’an was revealed in seven ‘Ahruf’ (dialects / modes of recitation), and in whichever one of these ways a person recites, he is correct.
Ahmad reported in his Musnad from the Hadeeth of ‘Amr ibn al-As, that the Messenger ﷺ said:
“The Qur’an has been revealed in seven Ahruf (dialects /different modes of recitation), and in whichever one of these ways you recite, you are correct. So do not dispute concerning it, for disputing over it is kufr.
Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ba Alawi
