▪️Is a woman’s voice considered ‘Awrah?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The questioner says: Is a woman’s voice ‘Awrah (something which must be kept hidden and concealed)?

📝 Answer:

Allah the Almighty says in his holy book:
{فَلَا تَخۡضَعۡنَ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ فَیَطۡمَعَ ٱلَّذِی فِی قَلۡبِهِۦ مَرَضࣱ وَقُلۡنَ قَوۡلࣰا مَّعۡرُوفࣰا}
‘Be not soft in speech, in case he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.’
[Surat Al-Ahzab 32]

A woman’s voice is not referred to as being an ‘Awrah. Nonetheless, if she speaks to men from behind a veil, she must not soften her speech or speak in an overly effeminate manner. Softening her speech is what a women has been prohibited from, so she should speak in a coarse manner and refrain from softening her speech.

Moreover, it is well known that the women amongst the Sahaabah used to address the men from behind a veil.

Therefore, what’s forbidden is for a woman to soften her voice; in case those in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire.
