▪️Praying with folded up clothes & tied / braided hair▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam – may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:
Is it Haraam to fold up clothes and tie back hair (Kaft) during Salaah?
The Prophet ﷺ forbade that, when he ﷺ said:
‘I have been commanded to prostrate on seven bones…and forbidden from folding up clothes and tying back hair’
[Hadeeth of Ibn Abbas, reported by Bukhaari and Muslim]
So it’s forbidden to do so, although most of the scholars said it’s disliked to do this (Kaft) inside the prayer. Kaft refers to folding up clothing as well as tying back the hair, and both these are prohibited.
Likewise, Muslim reports in his Saheeh from ‘Abdullah ibn Abbas that he saw ‘Abdullah ibn Al-Haarith praying with his hair plaited behind his head. So Abdullah ibn Abbas undid his hair. After the prayer, Abdullah ibn Al-Haarith asked him why he did that. So Ibn ‘Abbas replied: “I heard the prophet ﷺ saying: ‘Whoever prays with plaited hair is like one who prays with his hands tied up.’
However most of the scholars concluded that this is simply Makrooh (disliked). Nonetheless, the base rule is that prohibitions indicate that the matter in question is Haraam, so it’s best to leave it off altogether.
