▪️Does the prohibition of Kaft (folding up clothes and tying back hair) in Salah apply to both men and women alike?▪️
Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam – may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:
The questioner says: Does the prohibition of Kaft (folding up clothes and tying back hair) in Salah apply to both men and women alike?
The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘I have been forbidden from folding up clothes and tying back hair’
[Hadeeth of Ibn Abbas, reported by Bukhaari and Muslim]
The prohibition of folding up clothes applies to women aswell, but the prohibition of tying back hair (during Salaah) is specific to men, and does not include women; due to the narration of Umm Salamah, who said:
“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I am a woman with tight braids on my head, should I undo it to perform Ghusl for Janabah? He said: ‘No. It is sufficient that you only pour three scoops over your head, then pour water over the rest of your body, to be purified.”
This proves that she used to pray in her braids.
Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ba Alawi
