▪️Ruling on filling in eyebrows as well as bleaching them▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The (female) questioner says: What’s the ruling on filling in eyebrows using an (eyebrow) pen as well as bleaching them?

📝 Answer:

This is Haraam; it enters into altering Allah’s creation.

Allah the Almighty said of Shaytaan that he says:
{وَلَـَٔامُرَنَّهُمۡ فَلَیُغَیِّرُنَّ خَلۡقَ ٱلله}
“And I will surely order them to alter Allah’s creation.”
[Surat An-Nisa’ 119]

Allah has created women in the best form, and He also created the eyebrows in a good form, and seeking to further improve and beautify the eyebrow (in this manner) is contrary to the Sharee’ah; plucking, shaving and bleaching the eyebrows are all Haraam, and women must avoid doing so.

It’s an imitation of the enemies of Islam. And the Prophet ﷺ said,
((من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم))
“Whoever resembles a people is one of them”.

It [bleaching and filling/defining the eyebrows] also resembles An-Nams (plucking), and the Prophet ﷺ cursed the Naamisah (the woman who plucks the eyebrows until she makes it thin) as well as the Mutanammisah (the one who has it done).

This refers to beautifying one’s eyebrows by plucking the hair (around it). Similarly, whoever fills or bleaches the eyebrows falls under same sin [because their results are the same].

Bleaching (Tashqeer) refers to changing the colour of the brow to a colour similar to the skin so that it appear thin.

This is also prohibited, because:

  • it’s similar to An-Nams (plucking)
  • it enters into altering Allah’s creation
  • and it’s an imitation of the enemies of Islam.
