Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu’ayb -may Allah preserve him-

??Question:

May Allah bless you O shaykh.

Is it true that any hadith that comes with the mention ‘’Allah will forgive the previous sins and forthcoming sins of a person’’ is considered unauthentic?

??Answer:

The ‘Allaamah Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him said:

Some of the scholars have said:

“Know from the affairs which is specific to the Messenger ﷺ is that Allah forgave his previous and forthcoming mistakes.”

Therefore, any hadith that mentions whoever does such and such will have his past and forthcoming sins forgiven; will be an unauthentic hadith, as this was specific for the Messenger ﷺ.

As for :

(غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه)
‘’He will have his previous sins forgiven’’

Then this wording occurred frequently. But the wording:

(ما تأخر)
‘’Forthcoming ’’

Then this is solely for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what is exclusive to him.

This is a beneficial general principle for the student of knowledge (to grasp): That if your presented with a narration which mentions:

‘Whoever does such and such’ will have his previous and forthcoming sins forgiven; then know that the wording mentioning the forgiveness of the forthcoming sins is unauthentic and not correct; as this is from what’s specific and exclusive to Muhammed ﷺ’’.
