Question:
Concerning the statement of Allāh:
ٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُمُ ٱلطَّغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ ٱلنُّورِ إِلَى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِۗ أُو۟لَٰئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُون
“Allāh is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Awliyā (supporters and helpers) are Taghut [false deities and false leaders, etc.], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever” [Al-Baqarah, 257]
The word Tāghūt came mufrad (singular) form then the fi’l mudhāri’ after it came in plural so is there any reason for that?
Answer:
At-Tāghūt is what is worshipped besides Allāh while being pleased and it is pronounced for the plural and singular,
Allāh said:
وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱجْتَنَبُوا۟ ٱلطَّغُوتَ أَن يَعْبُدُوهَا وَأَنَابُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ لَهُمُ ٱلْبُشْرَىٰۚ
Those who avoid At-Tāghūt (false deities) by not worshipping them and turn to Allāh in repentance, for them are glad tidings; [Az-Zumar, 17]
The point of benefit
ٱجْتَنَبُوا۟ ٱلطَّغُوتَ
At-Tāghūt, The Tāghūt is singular and the dhamīr (pronoun ها) is singular,
أَن يَعْبُدُوهَا
So it is pronounced for the singular and plural and there is nothing preventing it from being used in this way or that way.
So it is said a man is a Tāghūt or to multiple things that are worshipped other than Allāh Tāghūt or Tawāghīt.
