Fasting on Jumu’ah’s

Question:

Our Shaykh, is it permissible to fast on the day of Jumu’ah only without fasting a day before it or after it?

Answer:

If an individual intends to single out the fasting of the day of Jumu’ah by itself, then this is what the evidence came with its prohibition.

In “Sahih Muslim” on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

(لَا تَخُصُّوا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِصِيَامٍ مِنْ بَيْنِ الْأَيَّامِ إِلا أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي صَوْمٍ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُمْ)

“Dont single out the day of Jumu’ah for fasting, from between the other days, except if it was a fast one normally fasts.”

And in the two “Sahihs” from Muhammed bin ‘Abād, that he said: I asked Jābir:

“Did the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ prohibit fasting the day of Jumu’ah?” and he said: “Yes.”

But if:

➖It was paired with a day before or after, as found in the two “Sahihs” on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

لا يَصُومَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلا يَوْمًا قَبْلَهُ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ

“Let not one of you fast the day of Jumu’ah except with a day before it or after it.”

And as found in the “Sahih” on the authority of The Mother of the Believers Juwayriyyah bint Al-Haarith, may Allaah be pleased with her, that the Prophet ﷺ visited her on the day of Jumu’ah while she was fasting and said to her: “Did you fast yesterday?” Whereby she said: “No”, to which he said: “Do you want to fast tomorrow?”, to which she replied: “No”, then he said: “Break your fast”.

➖Or it was to coincide with a day of fast which a person was accustomed to, like it comes in the previously mentioned Hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah, the fast of Daud for for example, or the fast of ‘Ashura, and the day of ‘Arafah.

➖Or if it was to coincide with a vow which actualised.

➖Or a repayment from Ramadhan.

These scenarios do not fall under the prohibition, due to lack of presence of the reason for its prohibition.
