Never Travel by Yourself

Question:

What is the ruling on travelling at night?

Answer:

Travelling at night is good. However, do not travel by yourself, because the one who travels by himself is like the prophet ﷺ said:

الراكب شيطان والراكبان شيطانان والثلاثة ركب‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.”

[Narrated by At-Tirmithi and Abu Daawood]

So do not travel by yourself, travel with two, this is the sunnah when travelling, that you accompany someone else with you.

As for travelling by yourself then perhaps you may be afflicted by some harm where you will be in need of someone to help you. The prophet ﷺ said:

الراكب شيطان والراكبان شيطانان والثلاثة ركب‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.”

So every time you travel, then do so as a group and this is better especially at night, and the hadeeth is general.

And do not rely upon these means of travel (cars, buses, etc…) and assume that they are safer, rather they are more dangerous in our time, perhaps you may be afflicted with some sort of harm and damage whereupon you will be in need of someone to aid you and follow you on these roads. And the prophet ﷺ forbidded that a man should travel by himself.

So do not travel by yourself whether that be at night or day.
