Advise regarding using Facebook

Question:

O Shaykh of ours, it’s not obscured from you the fast expansion of this avenue of social media, called Facebook. This avenue is used in spreading affairs and I to used to use it, but I left it recently because the user is not in control over it; and this being that the things spread on your page have become as such that it’s not free from oppositions like pictures for example, due to the negligence of many in this affair. Likewise there is much vain talk and arguments which most of the time do not have an end to them, and many of our brothers from Ahlussunnah are not safe from these oppositions.

If this affair was like how I mentioned, what is your advise to them O Shaykh, in regards to using this avenue while its condition is as mentioned?

Or is it necessary to abstain from it, as a precaution for the well-being of your heart?

Bearing in mind that the avenues in spreading good and beneficial knowledge are many, and all praise is due to Allah.

Answer:

Our Shaykh, the ‘Allāmah Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajoori, may Allah preserve him, said as an answer to a question like this:

“A lot of people, muslims and disbelievers, have come together in this website, and some articles have reached us saying that it’s an intelligence based website, and a website which every so-and-so participates in, anyway, the summary is if they take your books or audios and your statements and spread it on this website there is no blame upon you from their actions, because the audios of the auditors and the books of the authors go to the far corners of the world, you don’t know what is being done to them, and a person is rewarded in this, and whoever was to conduct inappropriately regarding it then he is to carry the blame.

It contains pictures and other than it, this website being Facebook.

As for you entering into it, signing up to it with your name, and the sorts while there are pictures, while there is a sea of every Tom Dick and Harry, both righteous and wicked, Muslim and disbeliever, I do not advise with this.”

The answer is found in an audio on the website of the Shaykh.
