Love for the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ)

“The Poem”

حب الصحابة كلهم لي مذهب. ومودة القربى بها أتوسل

ولكنهم قدر علا وفضائل. لكنما الصديق منهم أفضل

Love for all the Companions is my belief
And my loving them brings me closer

They all have lofty positions and virtues
But Al-Sadiq is the best of them

======The Explanation=====

And his statement: Love (حب) is from the word for affection (محبة) which means to lean towards the one you love.

And his statement: Companions (الصحابة) is the plural for companion (صحابي). And the word companion (صحابي) is taken from the word (مصاحبة) companionship and (ملازمة) to stay close to. And what it means to be a companion of the Prophet, one that met the Prophet (ﷺ), believing in him, and died upon that, even if he apostated and then believed again. And this opinion is the most correct as is known from the statement of Ibn Hajar in his book, “Nukbatul fikr”. And it is the most correct definition of what is a companion. And the Companions were the best from this nation, and Allah chose them from amongst the people to be the Companions of His Prophet. And it is incumbent upon the people to love them because they carried the religion. And Allah and His Messenger praise them excessively, generally and specificly. And this is the beliefs of the People of the Sunnah.

And from the proofs of the Excellence of the Companions from the Book of Allah is that which follows:

  1. His the Most-High’s statement: {And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment}[Tawbah:100]
  2. His the Most-High’s statement: {Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward]. And Allah, with what you do, is Acquainted}[Hadid:10]
  3. His the Most-High’s statement: {For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.}[Hashr:8]

As for from the Sunnah then it is from this:

  1. Abu Said Al-Kudri said the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Do not abuse my companions for if any one of you spent gold equal to Uhud (in Allah’s cause) it would not be equal to a Mud or even a half Mud spent by one of them.” [Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith No. 3673
  2. Abu Said Al-Khudri said the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A time will come when groups of people will go for Jihad and it will be asked, ‘Is there anyone amongst you who has enjoyed the company of the Prophet?’ The answer will be, ‘Yes.’ Then they will be given victory (by Allah) (because of him). Then a time will come when it will be asked. ‘Is there anyone amongst you who has enjoyed the company of the companions of the Prophet?’ It will be said, ‘Yes,’ and they will be given victory (by Allah). Then a time will come when it will be said. ‘Is there anyone amongst you who has enjoyed the company of the companions of the companions of the Prophet?’ It will be said, ‘Yes,’ and they will be given victory (by Allah). [Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith No. 2897]

And from the statements of the Imaams:

  1. Imaam Malik said: “Whoever hates anyone from the Companions of Muhammad or has in his heart hatred for them he does not have the right to the spoils of war that is for the Muslims, then he recited:
{And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.}[Hashr:10]
  2. Imaam Ahmed said as it comes in Sunnah Laalakaai and he mentioned the superiority of the different Companions: “Everyone that accompanied him (ﷺ) for a year, a month, a day or an hour or saw him (ﷺ) then he is from the Companions. And his status as a companion is based on the level of his companionship. And what proceeded with him of what he heard from him or what he saw when looking at him. So they brought him closer in his companionship and he is more virtuous than generation that didn’t see him. Even if he was to meet Allah with all of their actions. And those were the ones that accompanied him and saw him and heard from him and saw him with their eyes, and believe in him even for an hour, there companionship is great then the ones that came after them, even if they did all the good actions.”
