Celebration at marriage agreement and marriage contract

Question :

Is it allowed to celebrate when the marriage agreement happens between and man and woman (when the families agreed upon to marry between thier children) ?

Answer :

[The Shaykh initially thought the question was about the celebration at the time of Marriage contract (Nikah), but it was clarified later – Translator’s note]

For the celebration when the marriage contract happens there is no proof for that. And this was not done either by the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) or by the Companions and after them the best generations.
These habits came to us from the enemies of Islam and the Khitbah (marriage contract) means the Ridah (Satisfaction) and Qabool (Acceptance) and if it happens then the marriage is completed.

And there is lot of expenditure for lot of youth at thier marriage. And this celebration takes lots of amounts of money. And this is not Mashroo (not permissible).

Questioner : Shaykh, In india the marriage agreement between both parties takes place at one time and the actual Nikah happens after a period of time like a Month. And they celebrate at the initial agreement. Is that allowed :

Shaykh : Even this also is not Mashroo (not permissble). And the correct guidance is the guidance of Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. And as for some known habitual things like giving some gifts or cloths during the occasion it doesn’t appear there to be any problem in that but gathering lot of people and renting function halls and giving lot of food which takes lot of money then this not from the legislation.
