Will the One Who Comitts Murder and Theft be Forgiven?

Question:

There’s a Muslim man who does not associate partners with Allaah, however he comitts murder and steals people’s money. Will he be forgiven on the day of judgement?

Answer:

These are the rights of the people, they are not forgiven for. (One will not be forgiven for their transgressions against others). These are the rights of the people, they are not forgiven for. They (the crimes mentioned in the question) are related to the rights of the Aadamiyeen (people). And the prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever has wronged his brother, should ask for his pardon (before his death), as (in the Hereafter) there will be neither a Dinar nor a Dirham. (He should secure pardon in this life) before some of his good deeds are taken and paid to his brother, or, if he has done no good deeds, some of the bad deeds of his brother are taken to be loaded on him (in the Hereafter). [Sahih al-Bukhari 6534]

This is the hadeeth of Abu Hurairah, and there’s another hadeeth by Abu Hurairah in Muslim (in which the Prophet ﷺ) said:

“Do you know who is the bankrupt?” They said: “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property”. He said, “The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salat (Prayers), Saum (Fasting) and Sadaqah (Zakat and Charity). And at the same time, he would come having abused this one, and slandered that one, and consumed the wealth of the other unlawfully, and shed the blood of yet others and having beaten others. Then the oppressed will each be given from his good deeds. If his good deeds run out before justice is fulfilled, then their sins will be cast upon him and he will be thrown into the Hellfire.” [Muslim 2581]

And likewise it is mentioned in the ahadeeth that the one who was killed will say: “O Lord. Ask this man why he killed me”[¹]. And the prophet ﷺ said:

“The rights of everyone will be restored on the Day of Resurrection until justice is fulfilled, even between the hornless sheep and the horned sheep.” [Muslim 2582]

Therefore all of these (proofs) clearify that the Muslim must return the rights of the people to their rightful owners before death comes to him.

FOOTNOTE:

[¹] Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with them) reports that the Prophet ﷺ said: “On the day of judgement the killer and the victim will come face to face, and the victim will be holding his head in his hands, and his veins will spill forth blood. He will ask: O Lord. Ask this man why he killed me’, and Allaah will bring the victim closer to the throne.’ [Tirmidhi 2,955]
