We have heard from an Imaam of a salafi masjid here in America saying,”It is permissible to wear jeans as long as they are not tight fitting. Oh Shaikh, can you please clarify to us the ruling of Muslims in the West wearing jeans pants? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
This statement is not correct. The issue is not an issue of tight or not tight but resemblance of the people of Democracy, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever imitates a people is of them.” [Abu Dawud] It is not permissible for men, women or children to wear the jeans pants whether they be tight or loose. The ruling is general for all types of jeans. Even if it is the clothing of the land you live in and the people you are from, as Allah the Most-High says:
{إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا آبَاءنَا عَلَى أُمَّةٍ}
“Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion,” [al-Ankabut:23]
The Prophet ﷺ also said, “Differ from the polytheists..” It is not permissible for the Muslims to wear jean pants, whether they are tight fitting or not.
