Question : The brother questioner says: Oh Shaykh, we are Salafees from Kolkata in the north of India. We live amongst the disbelievers, and we are afflicted by the Fitnah of Jam’eeyaat and adding to this superstitious people and extreme grave worshipers. And from them is the Jam’eeyah Ahlehadith in Kolkata; they pay the Imam’s of the Masaajid a monthly salary. And they make compulsory to have a committee in the Masaajid, with that which comprises of Hanafees that are totally extreme in their Aqeedah. And the Imam’s of the Salafi Masaajid find unease (to speak about) Salafiyyah so they may preserve their salaries. And they pray funeral prayers upon the grave worshipers in their Masaajid. And they mingle with the people of innovation and even the grave worshipers and Mushrik’s, and they attend parties such as religious marriage ceremonies which involve innovations. They also believe that whoever recites the Shahadatain are Muslims, however much of acts of Shirk he may commit, and they say: “They are our brothers”. They also have regularly organised workshops in which they charge money. They (i.e the questioners) say; some of the teachers in these workshops are innovators, and they teach innovations in it. We have warned (the people) against them and called them towards Salafiyyah but they have not ceased to be upon their Hizbiyyah, but rather they have accused us of Khorooj (i.e. to go out against the rulers). We do not pray behind them and we establish the prayers with Ahlus-Sunnah. So what is your advise to us?
Answer : We advise each other with the fear of Allah the Glorified Most High. The advice of Allah to His servants:
يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون
O you who believe! Fear Allah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah. [Aal-Imran: 102]
ولقد وصينا الذين أوتوا الكتاب من قبلكم وإياكم أن اتقوا الله
And verily, We have recommended to the people of the Scripture before you, and to you (O Muslims) that you (all) fear Allah [an-Nisa: 131] And we advise with striving for beneficial knowledge and righteous actions, so strive towards knowledge and good deeds, and engage in that which benefits you. As is reported in Muslim in Saheeh (i.e. his collection of authentic Hadeeth) on the authority of Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Prophet – may the peace and salutations of Allah be upon him said -:
احرص على ما ينفعك واستعن بالله ولا تعجز
‘Be eager towards that which benefits you, and seek the aid of Allah and do not be incapable’.
And we advise each other with holding firm to the book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet – may the peace and salutations of Allah be upon him -, and we advise upon adhering to the Manhaj of our righteous predecessors – may the pleasure of Allah the Blessed Most High be upon them -. For everything that opposes the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger – may the peace and salutations of Allah be upon him – and the Manhaj of the righteous predecessors; we stay away from and turn away from it. And that which you have mentioned of the acts of these charity organisation’s, and that which they do of actions indicates their not showing importance to the Manhaj of the righteous predecessors – may the pleasure of Allah the Blessed Most High be upon them – and it shows that they have no concern of distinguishing truth from the falsehood and differentiating the Sunnah from the innovations, and distinguishing between Tawheed from Shirk. And this is the call that revolves around the Manhaj of Hasan al-Bana and the Dawah of the Ikhwaan al-Muslimeen. So if the state is as you have mentioned then we do not advise with mixing with them. I advise you all that you single yourselves out with your Dawah which is upon the Book of Our Lord and the Sunnah of Our Prophet – may the peace and salutations of Allah be upon him – upon the Manhaj of the righteous predecessors – may the pleasure of Allah the Blessed Most High be upon them -. For they are upon as you have mentioned of these actions upon a grave danger. And you strive upon that which benefits you of knowledge and teaching and calling to Allah the Glorified and Most High. And likewise whoever is unable to travel to seek knowledge with Ahlus-Sunnah wa al-Jamaa’h in Yemen or in the Kingdom (of Saudi Arabia) or other than them. We advise him to show concern to the lessons of the People of Knowledge, knowledge-based lessons from Aqeedah and Fiqh and Tawheed and other than it from the legislative knowledge. Download them from the websites and listen. And show concern to the translated books that are benefited from, and he should call to Allah the Glorified Most High according to his ability and he also learns his religion. The two Sheikh’s (i.e. al-Bukhari and Muslim) reported on the authority of Mu’awiyah – may Allah be pleased with him – he said: The Messenger of Allah – may Allah be pleased with him – said:
من يرد الله به خيرا يفقه في الدين
‘Whoever Allah wants good for he gives him understanding of the religion’. And in at-Tirmithi on the authority of Ibn Abbaas the likes of this. So it is upon us to strive towards knowledge a great striving, upon knowledge, teaching and calling to Allah the Glorified Most High. We Ask Allah the Glorified Most High to give success to that which he loves, and he makes us of those who listen to speech and follow that which is best of it. And all praise is for Allah the Lord of all of creation, and may Allah reward you all with good.
