May Allaah curse the Jews and Christians, they took the graves of their Prophets as Masaajid

Benefit:

Chapter: What has come from the severity of the one who worships Allaah at the grave of a righteous man, so how about if they worshipped him?

And in the two Sahihs from Ā’ishah: That Umm Salamah mentioned to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ a church she saw in the Land of Habasha and what was in it of pictures, so he said: “Those ones if a righteous man or slave amongst them died they built a Masjid over his grave, and placed in it those pictures; They are the worst of people with Allaah.”

So those ones combined between two Fitnas: The Fitnah of graves and the Fitnah of statues.

And they (reported) from her, she said: When (death) approached the Prophet ﷺ, he began to place a thowb of his over his face, so if he became distressed by it he uncovered it, so he said -: While he was like that – “May Allaah curse the Jews and Christians, they took the graves of their Prophets as Masaajid.” – He was warning from their action -, and had it not been for that, he would of exposed his grave, except that he feared that it be taken as a Masjid.” [Reported by Bukhaari and Muslim]

And from Muslim from Jundub bin Abdillaah, he said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ before he died by five: “I free myself to Allāh from having a Khaleel (intimate friend) from amongst you. For indeed Allaah has taken me as a Khaleel just as he has taken Ibraaheem as a Khaleel. And had I taken a Khaleel from amongst my ummah, I would of taken Abaa Bakr as a Khaleel. Is it not indeed that those before you used to take the graves of their Prophets as Masaajid; So do not take the graves as Masaajid, for indeed I prohibit you from that .”

For indeed he prohibited from it during the last part of his life. Then he cursed – and it was in the context of – the one doing it. And praying next to it is from that even if they don’t build a Masjid, for verily the Sahaabah didn’t build next to his grave a Masjid, and every place which Salaah is intended in it is called a Masjid, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Earth has been made a for me a Masjid and purification.”

And to Ahmed with a Jayyid chain of narration from Ibn Mas’ood may Allaah be pleased with him Marfoo’: “Verily from the worst of people are those who the hour is established while they are alive, and those who take the graves as Masaajid.” [Reported by Abu Haatim in his Sahih]

In it are Masaa’il (topics)

The First: “What the Prophet ﷺ mentioned about the one who built a Masjid to worship Allaah in it at the graveyard of a righteous man, even if the intention of the one doing it is good.”

The Second: The prohibition of statues, and he stressed the commandment concerning that.

The Third: The consideration is in his exaggerating concerning that. How he clarified to them this firstly, then before he died by five, he said what he said, then when the context came (again) he didn’t suffice with what preceded.

The Fourth: His prohibiting from doing this action at his grave before his grave was present.

The Fifth: That it’s from the Sunnah of the Jews And Christians concerning the graves of their Prophets.

The Sixth: His cursing them for that.

The Seventh: That his intention is warning us from his grave.

The Eighth: The reason for not exposing his grave.

The Nineth: Concerning the meaning of taking a Masjid.

The Tenth: That he compared between the one taking it and the one standing at it for a moment, so he mentioned the possibility of it leading to Shirk before its occurring with its end result.
