If the day of Arafah coincides with the day of Jumu’ah

Question:

If the day of Arafah coincides with the day of Jumu’ah

Answer:

If the day of Arafah coincides with the day of Jumu’ah, the people fast it whether they fasted a day before it or not, so they fast it. And the day of Arafah is the best day to do voluntary fast, it expiates the previous year along with the coming. So if you’re accustomed to fasting it and it coincides with Jumu’ah, then verily you fast, and the Prophet ﷺ said:

وَلاَ تَخُصُّوا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِصِيَامٍ مِنْ بَيْنِ الأَيَّامِ، إِلاَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي صَوْمٍ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُم

“Do not specify the day of Jumu’ah with fasting amongst the other days, except if it is a fast that you (regularly) fast.”

And you didn’t specify it for fasting, you fast it (always), whether it comes on the day of Jumu’ah or not, for indeed it is your customary fast every year, so don’t avoid fasting it if it coincides with the day of Jumu’ah, due to his statement:

إِلاَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي صَوْمٍ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُم

“Except if it is a fast that you (regularly) fast.”

i.e. accustomed to, and you are accustomed to fasting the day of Arafah if it coincides with Jumu’ah or not.
