Is it permissible to wear ‘saraweel’ that does not accentuate the ‘awrah’?
Answer:
We advise that it not be worn because the scholars do not view it permissible to wear ‘saraweel’ except if it is underneath (another item of clothing).
(The Prophet ﷺ said:)
تسرولوا وائتزروا
Wear the ‘sirwaal’ and the ‘izaar’ (over it)
[Hadith Abou Omamah in The Musnad of Imam Ahmad. Hadith Number: 2283]
As for going outside in a ‘sirwaal’ without an ‘izaar’, we advise you to leave this action.
As for (wearing) trousers – No
However, if the sirwaal is worn underneath another garment, some scholars view this (to be permissible) and if the sirwaal is covered with a shirt over it that reaches half (of the lower body).
This is the clothing of the people of India and there is nothing wrong with it nor is there anything (from the religion) that prevents it (being worn).
It is also from the clothing of other nearby countries such as Pakistan and other than Pakistan.
There is nothing to stop this being worn if it is done so under a shirt that reaches half of the lower body. In this case, there is nothing wrong with it. It is the clothing of these countries who are not to be criticized for wearing it. It does not constrict the ‘awrah’ or anything of the sort, especially if he is wearing a shirt.
