Blowings of Trumpet

Question:

How many number of blowings of the trumpet are there and what is the evidence for that?

Answer:

There are two blows [of the trumpet]. The first is the blowing of amazement and the second is the blowing of gathering.

And the evidence for this from the Book of Allaah is:
His statement the Most High:

{وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا مَن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۖ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِيهِ أُخۡرَىٰ فَإِذَا هُمۡ قِيَامٞ يَنظُرُونَ}

And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead amazed except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on. [Surah Az-Zumar :68].

His statement the Most High:

{يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ * تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ}

On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [the creation],

There will follow it the subsequent [one].
[Surah An-Naazi’aat: 6 and 7].

The first convulsion is the first blowing, while the subsequent one is the second blowing.

His statement the Most High:

{مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيۡحَةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ تَأۡخُذُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ يَخِصِّمُونَ* فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ تَوۡصِيَةٗ وَلَآ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ*وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ يَنسِلُونَ}

They do not await except one blast which will seize them while they are disputing.

And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.

And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten. [Surah Yaaseen: 49,50,51.]

And from the sunnah
What came in the two authentic books [Al-Bukhaaree 4935 and Muslim 2955],

On the authority of Abee Hurayrah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said:

What is between the two blowing is fourty.

He asked: is it fourty days?
He replied: I decline [to say that which I did not hear, or that I know that, while it is the from the Unseen].
He asked: is he fourty months?
He replied: I decline.
He asked: is it fourty years?
He replied: I decline.

He said:

Then Allaah will descends water from the sky, then they[the people] will grow, just like he grows legumes, and there will be absolutely nothing from mankind except it will wettened, except for a single bone which is the coccyx bone ie the tail bone [the end of the vertebra column] and from it, is what the creatures will be assembled, on the day of standing.

What came also in the saheeh Muslim 2940,

On the authority of Abdullaah Ibn Amr Ibn Al-Aas رضي الله عنهما that he heard the Messenger of Allaah  ﷺ saying:

“Then the trumpet would be blown and no one would hear that, except he would bend his neck to one side and raise it from the other side and the first one to hear that trumpet would be the person who would be busy in setting right the tank meant for providing water to his camels.

He would be amazed and the other people would also be amazed, then Allaah would send or He would descend rain which would be dew or it will be like dew [the narrator Nu’maan doubted as to which] and the bodies of the people would grow out of it.

Then the second trumpet would be blown and they would stand up and begin to look (around). Then it would be said: O people, go to your Lord, and they would be made to stand. And they would be questioned. Then it would be said: Bring out a group (out of them) for the Hell-Fire. And then it would be asked: How many? It would be said: Nine hundred and ninty-nine out of one thousand for the Hell-Fire and that would be the day which would make the child grow grey hair and that would be the day when the shank would be uncovered.”

Some people of knowledge opinion is that it is three blows, which are:

The blowing of Terror, the blowing of amazement and the blowing resurrection.

They derive as an evidence for this:

With His statement the Most High:

{وَيَوۡمَ يُنفَخُ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَفَزِعَ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا مَن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ}

And [warn of] the Day, the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified except whom Allah wills.[Surah Naml: 87].

The exegetes explain the [blowing of] terror in the ayah that it is a blowing preceding the blowing of amazement.

Also with the hadeeth of the long horn of abee Hurayrah رضي الله عنه in which he said:

“Oh Messenger of Allaah what’s  the horn?
He said: the trumpet
He said: how is it?
He said: it is a great trumpet in which three blows are blown into it.
The first is the blowing of terror, the  second is the blowing of amazement and the third is the blowing of the standing for the Allaah, the Lord of all that exist.”
It’s a weak hadeeth.

What is closer [to being correct] is that it is just two blows: the first is the blowing of amazement which is also the blowing of terror mentioned in the ayah, which terrifies the people before their deaths and the second is the blowing of Resurrection. And Allah knows best.

Imaam Al-Qurtubee رحمه الله تعالى said in Al-Jaami’ Lil-Ahkaami-lQur’aan

“And what is correct in regards the blowing of the trumpet is that they are two not three, and the blowing of terror only returns to blowing of amazement, and because the two issues accompany themselves ie they are terrorized intensely and die [as a result] of it.” End quote.
